The Ugly Side of Pro-Choice

In yesterdays Fifth Column I made my Pro-Choice position clear. I also made it clear that I deplored the disgusting negative tactics and rhetoric of the so-called “Pro-Life” movement. I believe these tactics have helped marginalize them.

I believe that similar rhetoric, that attempts to trivialize pregnancy and the decision facing women considering an abortion, from those that support the Pro-Choice movement, is just as deplorable and does not help the movement in maintaining credibility and broad public support. What I find to be particularly disgusting is the use of the terms “fetus fetishists” and “fetus fetishizers” and I wish to disassociate myself completely from the use of such terms.

I totally agree!
I have difficultly understanding how the use of such demeaning language can be seen as even the lowest form of sarcasm. I'm not sure why it is necessary to mirror the worst invective of the pro-lifers.

Talk about precluding any chance of dialogue!

Good post, I commend you for holding your side accountable. While too few pro-lifers hold their own side accountable when it engages in extremist tactics, there are even fewer pro-choice types who hold their own accountable.

Personally, I say a pox on both houses.

A trivial, sarcastic rebuttal.

So, you think that calling the abortion criminalizing individuals who obsessively exploit embryonic images and fetal effigies "fetus fetishizers" is inappropriate?

Unfortunately, spin works wonders when you want readers to pay attention to the content of your message. You should know that - you're certainly not above using a flashy title to catch the eye or a controversial topic to pique the curiosity of those who may read you. You're a blogger, aren't you?

Hey Fifth, gimme a freaking break! How long have you been working the issue? Are you one of those menz who have had an abortion?

Hey, but you just go ahead and tell the womenz how to behave. Some things never change, no matter how progressive the menz claim to be...

Sigh.
